Background of Book |
The comparisons and ties between Micheal Burt and Rick Insell are remarkable. The two championship
coaches grow up in the same small town of Woodbury (Tenn.). They both led high school basketball
programs to stardom winning state championships as young coaches, and both have strong ties with
Middle Tennessee State University.
When Micheal Burt chose to pen his fourth and most expansive book, The Anatomy of Winning- how to
REWIRE people to win, he wanted Rick Insell onboard. He called his long time friend and mentor,
Rick Insell, to leverage the values learned in a small town, into chasing big dreams.
Burt wrote about the nine-year process of building a culture to deeply develop the potential of
his team. He would illustrate how that process could be duplicated all over the country in both
athletics and in business. Burt had carved out the seven components of a championship culture.
His experience as a performance coach to some of the top companies in the world, including Dell,
Inc., and State Farm Insurance, coupled with his athletic background set the stage for the ultimate
“how to” book for those who want to build cultures that produce. Burt expressed these sentiments
about the writing process and the inspirational direction in writing the book:
Much has been written about individual motivation, team dynamics, and leadership, but there has
been very little explored about how to build a culture that produces. Think about the cultures
that you work in. They’re either positive or negative and either allows you to be your best or
they straightjacket your potential. Much of this is determined and driven by the primary leader
and the people you have on the bus. Once you get these people on board, then what? Someone has
to direct and harness all that energy, either positive or negative, toward a common destination.
This book offers real life examples applicable for both the athletic and business world, of how
to produce a culture that achieves maximum potential of its vision and its people. Wouldn’t it
be nice if you had a blueprint that drove your actions and helped you realize what to do next
with your team?
I asked Coach Insell to join me in the writing process because of his expansive knowledge in the
subject area, his dynamic personality, and his ability to think big and act on those thoughts.
The collaboration process has been special and his insight and drive are contagious. Where else
would you find anyone who has accomplished in their lifetime what he has?
A pioneer in both coaching and in business, Micheal Burt has revolutionized coaching through
‘rewiring’ people. By encompassing the ideas of business gurus such as Stephen Covey, Jim Collins,
and Peter Senge, Burt can then reach the minds and hearts of his players - offering a competitive
advantage - on and off the court as they compete in the market.
Co-authors Burt and Insell met monthly to share their strategies and comparisons as to how these
two leaders built their winning cultures is rooted throughout the pages.
In 2008, Burt joined the Lady Raiders on the road at both LSU and Tennessee to get a first-hand
look into how Coach Insell prepared the team to face top level competition. Journal entries from
Burt are included in the book coupled with behind-the-scenes pictures.
Insell is excited about the project and hopes it helps him tell how he is taking MTSU to the next
level as well as the process and story behind building the Shelbyville dynasty:
My passion in life is to build winning cultures. I believe in dreams and the fulfillment of those
dreams and everyday I get to live mine by coaching at Middle Tennessee State University. Micheal
and I have known each other for years and we subscribe to the same type of expansive thinking.
This book allows us to share the insights we’ve both used in both the athletic arena and business
arena to build winners for life.
Some urged Micheal that writing a book on cultures would be difficult, he disagreed:
When you study cultures many would tell you that there are simply too many variables to control
to build one that produces. I disagree. I believe that great cultures begin with a dream,
followed by the right leader who can direct that dream into a reality. There must be a blueprint
to get there, a mindset of the people that is ready to expand, a system that re-enforces the core
mission of the organization, and a journey where you pinpoint and adjust as needed and build
the know-how of each person to produce. |

Once you do create that which you desire and you reach your ideal picture of success,
I believe you must be able to re-create or re-imagine yourself to either leverage the
experience or re-produce it again. This process is what this book is all about. Creating
an environment that gives birth to the potential of the people involved and helping those
who read it break through their current ceilings of success, to move to new levels.
If you’re serious about achieving a break through with your team or your organization
then this will be a book you need to read. |
